Afternoon keynote: The road to Autonomous IT

After lunch, the keynote began with a customer video featuring Fujifilm celebrating their digital transformation and partnership with Tanium—a powerful way to set the stage for the afternoon sessions.

Tanium VP of Product Marketing Andy Leong then took the stage to set the tone for a deep dive into the technology behind Autonomous IT. He explained that real-time intelligence—managing the volume, velocity, and variety of data and turning it into action—is what makes autonomy possible. It all starts at the endpoint, and Tanium’s unique ability to deliver this intelligence is what sets the platform apart.

He then previewed the afternoon agenda, which featured a fireside chat with Zack Kass, global AI advisor and former GTM lead at OpenAI, alongside Harman Kaur, Tanium SVP of technology strategy and AI, followed by a Technology State of the Union with CTO Matt Quinn.

The next renaissance: AI and the expansion of human potential

Harman and Zack explored how AI is reshaping the way we work and live—not as a replacement for humans, but as a force multiplier for creativity and progress.

Zack reflected on OpenAI’s early days, explaining that science alone doesn’t change the world. In 2021, GPT-3 existed, but adoption lagged until OpenAI built ChatGPT—a simple, intuitive interface designed to help CEOs convince CTOs to adopt the technology. The lesson: usability, not complexity, drives adoption.

He compared early AI “wrappers” to market makers in financial systems, arguing that simplifying access creates real value. The challenge for builders: avoid becoming a commodity as agent-driven systems emerge.

Looking ahead, Zack introduced the concept of the agentic internet, predicting two major shifts:

  1. Automation boundaries and preferences: People will soon discover which decisions they want to automate and which they want to keep. For enterprises, this means defining a “preference stack” to balance efficiency with human judgment.
  2. A structural shift in the web: The internet will move from being HTML-driven to one shaped by TXT and XML, enabling agent-driven interactions and natural language interfaces. Devices will become wearable, displays less critical, and technology self-evident, which will help erase the digital divide.

Zack warned of a widening K curve in AI adoption, where some companies accelerate while others fall behind. He also highlighted a misunderstood truth: as inference costs plummet, intelligence is becoming a utility like water or electricity. Technology alone isn’t enough; meaningful impact requires real-world understanding and experiences that expand access.

The conversation even touched on chatbots (“basically an AOL instant messenger”) to highlight the magic in simplicity. He also predicted what’s next for AI: voice interfaces, telemetry-driven agents, and a future where machines adapt to us rather than the other way around. Additionally, he believes devices will become wearable, displays will become less critical, and technology will become self-evident, helping erase the digital divide.

The reality is that we've built these very complex machines that work for some of us, but not many of us. And I actually think those days are coming to an end. I think that the digital divide is very nearly over because machines will effectively become self-evident in the way that communicating with another human is.

Zack also addressed what OpenAI got right (predicting intelligence as a resource) and wrong (underestimating societal inertia), and warned of challenges like ethical risks, bad actors, identity displacement, and the erosion of critical thinking. Humans, he argued, must compete on creativity, empathy, and conviction—not routine tasks.

I know that I sit here because of my storytelling ability. It is not lost on me that everything I'm saying could have been a ChatGPT response… 5.1 is quite smart. This is something very comforting to me that you could get this response elsewhere, but it matters that I'm sitting here saying it, my tone, my intonation... these things, my conviction matters.

Despite these hurdles, Zack’s outlook was optimistic: AI will drive cost deflation, expose inefficiencies in housing, healthcare, and education, and accelerate breakthroughs in life sciences, materials, and energy—from custom gene therapies to proton batteries and fusion.

Matt reminded the audience of last year’s commitment: to expand the types of devices Tanium can see and manage. Historically, Tanium focused on core IT assets like servers, laptops, and workstations, but customers made it clear that endpoint diversity is growing, and these devices are critical to business operations.

He underscored the urgency of closing visibility gaps across diverse device types. Most management tools only cover half of an organization’s devices, leaving OT, IoT, and mobile assets exposed. The goal is clear: bring everything under one control plane, without bolt-on complexity.

These new endpoints integrate at a foundational level: reports, dashboards, automation, and Tanium Ask all work without bolt-on complexity. Comply now matches vulnerabilities against OT devices, strengthening security posture.

Matt emphasized that this expansion required deep engineering work to extend Tanium’s identity and device recognition mechanisms, paving the way for rapid support of future device types.

Matt transitioned from endpoint expansion to how Tanium’s Autonomous IT approach is taking shape—powered by real-time data, automation, and AI, and already seeing strong adoption among customers:

  • Over half of customers are already using Tanium Automate and other new automation features
  • More than 80 percent receive actionable Tanium Guide notifications to flag and remediate issues automatically
  • Over half use agentic AI features like Tanium Ask for natural language to query their environments and automate actions

Matt emphasized that expanding endpoint visibility and embedding automation and AI into IT operations is only part of the story. A revolution like Autonomous IT requires strong partners to make it real.

With that, he introduced Shawn Bice, Microsoft’s corporate VP for security platform and AI, for a discussion about how Tanium and Microsoft are working together to shape the future of secure, data-driven IT.

Microsoft partnership: A conversation with Shawn Bice

Shawn began by sharing his career journey across Microsoft, AWS, and Splunk—a path defined by a passion for data and its intersection with AI and security. He explained that graph technology, though widely referenced, is often misunderstood. At its core, a graph consists of four concepts: nodes (things), edges (relationships), hops (distance between nodes), and traversals (journeys through the graph).

Why does this matter for security? Graphs provide contextual focus for large language models (LLMs) and enable advanced scenarios like blast radius analysis. Shawn highlighted the importance of multi-source breadth-first search (BFS), a traversal algorithm rarely implemented but critical for detecting attacks that originate from multiple points simultaneously.

The conversation then turned to the synergy between graph and AI. Shawn likened enriching graphs with Tanium and Microsoft data to adding traffic and weather layers to Google Maps to illustrate how more context leads to better decisions. He emphasized that there is no single graph; rather, multiple graphs exist across networks, endpoints, and applications. And that the more these graphs are enriched, the more powerful and precise AI becomes.

Shawn underscored the role of partners like Tanium in this ecosystem. He cited the recent JLR cyber incident, which disrupted thousands of suppliers and impacted the U.K. economy, as a stark reminder of what’s at stake. “Good guys working together” is foundational to making the world safer, echoing the military concept of an overmatch strategy applied to cybersecurity.

Finally, Shawn addressed the dual nature of AI with its potential for good and its risk of weaponization. He warned that offensive AI agents could overwhelm traditional defenses, much like swarms of drones changing the dynamics of modern warfare.

This is why security teams must rethink their strategies and embrace AI-centric and agentic models to stay ahead. Collaboration and automation, he concluded, aren’t optional: they’re essential to reimagining security in the era of AI.

Harman reflected on the journey since last year’s launch of Autonomous Endpoint Management. She noted that many organizations have automated processes and leveraged real-time data to power those automations, and, most importantly, provided feedback that has shaped Tanium’s evolution.

She explained that this session would go beyond a retrospective—it would outline what’s available today, what’s coming next, and how these innovations move Tanium closer to a fully autonomous future.

  • Comply-to-Patch integration maps compliance findings to OS patches, allowing teams to add patches to cycles or create new lists with a single click.

HuntIQ was the first step, and now advanced hunter tools like context-based anomaly detection will strengthen security posture. Risk, compliance, and exposure management

Matt highlighted improvements in vulnerability and compliance scanning, including unified reporting for consistent risk visibility and upcoming native scanning technologies that expand endpoint coverage with minimal impact. Beyond identifying risk, Tanium enables automatic remediation through features like Comply-to-Patch and confidence-based prioritization.

Recognizing the need for a holistic view, Tanium is expanding beyond endpoints to external scanning, attack surface visibility, attack path management, and proactive policy enforcement, all designed to give organizations real-time insight into their complete security posture.

Automation and managed playbooks

To help customers create integrated outcomes, Tanium is developing managed playbooks: ready-to-use or customizable workflows for scenarios like scan-to-patch pivots and software reclamation. Combined with Tanium Automate and AI-driven orchestration, these playbooks empower organizations to move beyond individual tools toward end-to-end solutions.
